No cis actor should ever play queer/trans characters, I do not understand how you can continue to champion ONeill for this.
If he was the amazing aware ally the canyon is making him out to be, then he would have reflected before taking this role and instead of profiting of the trans community done the actually supportive thing and let a trans actor have the role. (I’m not saying that he necessarily had bad intentions but to be a good ally wanting to do good is not enough, you have to actually put the work in and educate yourself!)
Go support trans actors of color and trans women instead of simping for some straight-passing cis guy!
0/10 rage bait.
Must try harder.
What is this word vomit? Why are we pretending that being 'queer' means NOT being cis???? The majority of queer (gay, lesbian, bi, pan, ace/aro etc) people ARE cis????
We don't even KNOW Con's identity because he's private and other than coming out as being part of the queer community, we have no idea what that looks like or means for him.
What character is even being discussed here? (Possibly in reference to Val, a character with no concrete gender identity, who often went by male pronouns and was never confirmed to be trans or anything other than VAL).
Trans actors of colour?? Wasn't aware Con had ever taken a role as a POC?? What are you even blathering about?
'Straight passing' - absolutely laughable. Say you think all queer men should be femme stereotypes without saying it.
Also, lolling at the 'canyon' mention - because it shows whoever wrote this 1. is in the ofmd fandom and 2. likely stans Ed and Stede - two GAY characters played by STRAIGHT, CIS, MEN. (Rhys has also done roles in drag and made debatably transphobic jokes in his stand-up ("I like transformers...chicks with dicks") but obviously, they can do no wrong. Because they're the straightwashed, comfortingly non-sexual gays.
Critical thinking skills of a lemon.

yknow what. I wanna say: CSA and COCSA survivors are all incredible, but I also wanna give a shout out to ppl who were exposed to sexual stuff or had any kind of sexual experience as a kid that they either aren't comfortable labelling as or don't consider abuse, but they know it still fucking sucked and shouldnt have happened. Even if that changes later in life and you identify as a victim/surivor, it can be messy to have to imagine those labels applying to the ppl in ur life and that can take time.
The most important thing is to prioritize your recovery + health, and to support other victims + survivors.

[ @bwv572 ]
Objectively bad for you, but they are fun and can be rationalized as good for you, just like literally every other bad thing
[ mitigatedchaos ]
In fact, I decided to avoid game development as a career partly out of such concerns. They'll be more valuable if we increase average human lifespan.
[ mitigatedchaos ]
I don't think that if we decide to eschew all entertainment, solely read non-fiction that's designed to increase our grasp over the world, focus solely on production, and max out the number of kids per family, leading to conflict, that this is really more meaningful; at the same time, I don't think that where video games are right now is necessarily good for society. Probably some time this century there will be adjustments based on attention limitations.
So this gets into an article I've been meaning to link here on Tumblr for a while, which is Cameron Harwick's "High Culture and Hyperstimulus," which argues that cultivating taste in the consumption of cultural goods is partly about resisting becoming a solved system.
It's not clear that e.g. woodworking is truly better hobby than strategy gaming. You learn more about wood and materials, and wood has a depth to it as a physical object. You obtain physical objects that represent your skill, such as making a ship in a bottle. If you build furniture, you obtain greater mastery over your environment.
However, while the map in a strategy game will be destroyed, so too, in time, will the ship in a bottle and furniture be destroyed. You gain greater mastery over your environment, and ability to express your intentions, but this comes at a cost in time.
You may be familiar with my infamous Funko Pop Hatred post, which has widely circulated on this website.
So I would say, with a video game, are you relaxing, are you learning, or are you socializing? Are you smiling and laughing, or just compulsively clicking?
If you are relaxing, then you are giving your brain some slack. If you are learning, then you are gaining some mastery over the world. If you are socializing, then you may be making valuable enduring friends (and if the game is setup so that you can't gain long-term friends, then it's just utilizing human competition to add dimension to the conflict).
Social media is similar to video games in its attention structure, in my opinion. Consider the habit of compulsively responding to arguments and having that hanging over you all day, rather than just arguing once per day and setting it aside for the other 23 hours.
My belief is that during the 21st century, there will be an increased consciousness on the issue of attention, leading to a reorganization of computer-based media through the imposition of a one hour daily episode format or something similar on video games and social media.
If this does not occur, then there will be an increasing social movement towards a weekly "no electronics, no Internet" day, as a means to reset stimulus response and break compulsion-driven feedback loops.
Regarding video games, there is an argument as to whether or not they are good for people. I think that's a tough question.
An initial consideration: story (high density), skill (mastery), and emergent gameplay (mastery) are good; gacha (gambling) and grind (low-density) are bad.
Computer games can teach intuition, but only if that's the thing they are actually doing.

in MDZS the novel, the innkeeper in Yunping mentions that people are too scared to go petition Yunmeng Jiang for help because someone once walked in on Sect Leader Jiang whipping a guy in the main hall, supposedly because the guy was a demonic cultivator.
#mdzs#jiang cheng#wei wuxian#jc apologism#anyways as you can hopefully tell by now this is a jc stan blog.#so as a stan i will do my rightful stan duty and insist that my fave did nothing wrong#so. onwards. the “jiang cheng tortures demonic cultivators” claim is interesting on several levels#because we don't see it happen onscreen. and because thematically mdzs is a book about the unreliability of rumors#especially when said rumors conform to your preexisting understanding of someone. or what you want to hear about someone#it would have been so easy for mxtx to include a scene where jc tortures a demonic cultivator onscreen. i would love to read it too#but that doesnt happen. when jc actually corners wwx he just shoves a dog in his face and bullies him emotionally#smh jc get your shit together!! what is this lame ass display?? not living up to your reputation here loser#anyways. tbh i consider two things separately: 1. mxtx's intentions. and 2. what the text itself implies#for 1. i am legitimately unsure of what to think. mxtx relies on rumors/empathy/etc to give us info about side characters#in part because she's constrained herself to writing from wwx's perspective and has no other easy way of getting the info to us#does she intend for us to question the rumors? or are we supposed to take them as fact because of the narration limits described?#2. what the text itself implies is not necessarily the same as what mxtx intends.#for me mdzs is in part a story about the unreliability of rumors and reputation etc etc. other meta writers than i have explained it better#so for the work to go “all the rumors about wwx were exaggerated/manipulated/not 100% correct.”#“but the rumors about everyone else are 100% true!!!!!”#is peak stupidity. and shit-tier writing#and i actually like mdzs so i would like to believe the writer is more intelligent than that#thus. i conclude in part due to this emotional necessity of mine that there must have been something more going on#anyways. i have similar opinions about the “did jiggy kill rusong” business but that's a post for later#ill probably put my jc torture opinions in their own post some day#yanyan polls

I'll shut up abt jenova one day, but the idea that hojo is so proud of himself for having created sephiroth bc his will is so strong he can become a god using jenova just for sephiroth to have actually been influenced by jenova bc his mind wasn't strong enough to withstand jenova's control from how hojo raised him will not leave my mind

Litchrally like one of the top three things that are Very Important to me about OP (tfp) is the bit where he was, for all intents and purposes, a Decepticon. My IDEAL dynamic is basically
The kids, Orion Pax arc: wait, so Optimus was a Decepticon?!!
Ratchet: ACTUALLY, that's HIGHLY SIMPLIFYING a COMPLEX MATTER. back then there WERE no autobots and decepticons. we were not at WAR, so there were NO FACTIONS, so NO, he was definitely NOT A DECEPTICON. the IDEA. the NERVE.
----------------
The kids, post Orion Pax arc: so.... You were like the OG Decepticon?
Optimus: yeah

honestly it's been really healing being back to actively contributing things and writing out thoughts on tumblr the last week or so, because while twitter tends to be easier for me to write out Thoughts on without getting overwhelmed, the environment in the twitter fandom circles i'm interested in is not only infested with antis but cliqueish in a way that is caustic to the fucking soul if you try to express a thought that's more than three sentences long--a hundred times over if you're autistic in slightly the wrong way--and it's incredibly reassuring to come back to an environment where the very kindest and most inclusive people toward you are not clearly thinking the r-slur the entire time they interact with you lmao
#whosebaby talks#took an incident of just open petty cruelty the other day for me to finally go#you know what all of this is doing a huge number on my self-esteem and scrupulosity and social anxiety and mental health overall#sometimes it pays to hold out and give the benefit of the doubt#when your knee-jerk reaction is to think something Must Be a Sign of Shitty Intent; bc often it will turn out that wasn't the case at all#but unfortunately sometimes it turns out people are in fact just being shitty in exactly the way you thought they were#and at the *very* best you are incompatible in such a way that if they don't have bad intentions you're just never going to be able to tell#or well. not even necessarily bad *intentions*; just shitty behavior that's harmful to you regardless of whether they mean well#sometimes you just gotta accept that even if neither of you *is* being shitty it's not worth your peace of mind to never be able to confirm#and it's better to just save both of you the stress and not try to pursue that.#it fuckin sucks when it's people you think are cool and really want to get to know; it's a hard lesson to learn; but it's the way sometimes#......and then sometimes the confirmation you finally get is that yeah okay this is some bullshit#and not in a way that can likely be communicated past; no matter how much effort you make to be kind; clear; and mature#and being publicly humiliated for carefully trying to yes-and some clarification on meta of mine#which was being used in ways i was deeply uncomfortable with; and had had no warning would take the turn that it did#and which was contributing to the original post gaining traction in the first place#all targeted in ways pretty much tailor-made to hurt someone with specific issues they had seen me talk about + acknowledged#was just. yeah i think i'm done here lmao#i am Not someone who takes down meta once posted#so the fact that it was bad enough to make me delete an entire thread really says something lol#anyway. lots of other context there; and i appreciate that in some ways the person was genuinely trying to be kind; but i'm. yeah.#that shit Hurted Extremely; and made me realize that while i'm not the *most* well-socialized or articulate or approachable#there is just something in the water over there and no amount of The Problem Not Being Me would have mattered#and the nice asks/replies/comments i've gotten both recently and during hibernation make me feel warm inside; thank y'all <3#the salt files#bullying cw#ableism cw

Maybe it's just me, but part of why I never really felt completely secure in being public about my own artistic endeavors was how... being proud of yourself in any capacity for any reason is almost a faux pas, if that makes sense.
I've noticed how it's almost expected to perform the air of humility, but is that humility? Is it humility to say, "Oh, I'm sorry for clogging your feed with my awful art" or anything to the effect of self-deprecation?
I think that's why I so often gravitate toward those who make "bad art." There's a sense of freedom that is only achieved with the level of hubris that being unashamed in the number of people who hate your art. I wonder, though, how many people don't hate the art as much as they hate that they can't chastise the artist into humility, into recognizing how "terrible" an artist they "actually" are?

somehow i feel like reading this book as someone who is very very far from being a keefe fan made it easier
#unraveled spoilers#i didn't expect to care about this book at all tbh#and there were many times in this book in which i felt keefe was making the absolute worst decision/having the most nonsense thoughts#but that somehow made him more likeable to me?#idk we see him usually through sophie's pov where she's usually pretty positive about whatever he says/does (even when she shouldn't be)#and i think that's what irked me the most before. this idea that we're supposed to love keefe bc he's way more perfect than fitz#idk i think keefe is a super unreliable narrator and i don't necessarily blame shannon for there being a lot of fitz negativity#i say this as a fitz fan. keefe has a very messed up perspective on a lot of things rn and unraveled made that pretty clear#however. it does make me stand by my thinking that chapter 42 came too early#even if sophie had reached a calm point of sorts in her emotional journey keefe was still deep in whatever he's going through#anyway i know i tend to have a very optimistic view of new keeper books#but this is the first book for a while that i genuinely don't think the intention is to kick sophie and fitz's relationship while it's down#it's simply that alvar and keefe are just...not big fans of him rn? although i do think alvar went a bit hard on the fitz hating#anyway to connect this back to my og post. not liking keefe made it way easier to me to like the book bc i just treated it like a book-#-where i'm supposed to think the protagonist is super fucking wrong#ok long tags over. damn that was a lot

There's something fascinating about how the dynamic between gil and shiv in this austerlitz scene reads like an early parallel to roman and mencken in what it takes

wizardry as portrayed in pop culture is very much related to historical alchemy, which of course evolved into modern chemistry
therefore, it makes sense that wizard school is 80% lab practicals. chemistry is a Weird Degree even compared to the other physical sciences- the blue collar of white collar subjects, i've heard people describe it as. so if you're confused as to why Wizard School is like that, look no further than chemists!

I waffled on adding this to my previous post, but it's rotating in my head at top speed and I can't let it go, so...
The term for atonement used by both the chapter title and Ayumi in Japanese is 贖罪 shokuzai. Gramatically, this is perfectly sound and normal but here's what I can't stop thinking about.
The character 贖 (shoku) that makes up the first half of the word is also used to describe sacrificial lambs and scapegoats.
Based on how Ayumi describes Ai... I feel like that speaks for itself.
